When I met Amy and Kyle (and Mochi!) at their engagement session last summer, I already had an idea their wedding day was going to be rather special and was so looking forward to it. The California redwoods and surrounding areas are so scenic, and they are very much an outdoors couple. The time finally arrived on a sunny spring afternoon in Berkeley where I was met by a very calm Amy at her hotel, wearing a llama onesie.
With her bridal party in giraffe onesies, apart from bridesman Nathan who joined in with his giraffe T-shirt, the atmosphere was that of a really fun sleepover. It would not have surprised me to see the pizza delivery guy turn up! The excellent Carly helped make this group of beautiful women shine, and we were off to the venue.
Upon arrival at the Brazilian Room Amy put on her stunning BHLDN dress and her grandmother’s pearls, and we headed out to meet Kyle. The small eucalyptus grove was so pretty and magical – the perfect place for a first look.
The first look
Kyle’s reaction on seeing Amy was priceless, and trying to make him let go of her so I could take photos was difficult but so incredibly sweet! They were both also really happy to see Mochi – he had clearly been to the groomers and was wearing a sparkly bow tie for the occasion.
After the emotional ceremony, where guests threw paper planes instead of confetti for our travel-loving couple, it was time for the reception. Following the first dance, the dads made moving speeches and Amy danced with her father. Who, by the way, has some MOVES. This man on a dance floor is something to be seen!
Next up to the mic was Kyle’s mum Renee. Having spent months wracking her brains for a song to dance to with Kyle, she decided to write her own. The guests and I were open-mouthed in awe as they danced to the lyrics she wrote about her little boy. And yes, one photographer cried her little eyes out!
We danced, ate cake and did the conga through the venue. The Brazilian Room is such a beautiful venue in the California redwoods, just perfect for an elegant and intimate wedding.
The portrait session
I was so happy to see the newlyweds a day later at the botanical gardens at UC Berkeley for their portraits. They were giddy with newly married excitement and were clearly thrilled to put on their wedding clothes again and relive it. We had a blast wandering the gardens taking photos, and they were the best models. The happy thoughts in their heads were shining through their faces and making them glow.
They will be off for a very adventurous and fun honeymoon soon. Please join me in wishing them all the happiness in the world.
