On a beautiful afternoon in September, I drove up to the north shore of Lake Tahoe for the mountain wedding of Bex and Tex. Bex – Becky – the bride met Texan Matt while working at Tahoe so it was only fitting they flew in from Texas to have their wedding there.
Upon arrival at the beautiful lake house rented by the bridal party, I immediately felt I was in an advertisement for Abercrombie & Fitch. Seriously – everyone was so young and good looking! It was a hive of activity, as the girls got ready upstairs and the boys drank whiskey down in the kitchen. Becky was so nervous, and I think this is where having a first look can come in really handy. You get to see each other before the wedding, and all the nerves melt away.
After some photos and a shot of whiskey, we were off to Aspen Grove. As a wedding photographer I see many, many wedding venues in California and I would not hesitate to get married there. Named for its charming setting, Aspen Grove is nestled among the Aspen trees on beautiful Third Creek, most of which have hearts carved into them and the initials of couples who have been married here in the past. With stunning mountain and forest views, Aspen Grove is the perfect location for an intimate outside wedding.
I had a quick run through and practice with Ryan, close friend turned officiant for the day, and then it was time. Matt’s face lit up when he saw Becky walk down the aisle, and it was clear when she saw him that her nerves put on their party outfits and turned into excitement. They said their heartfelt vows, and as they walked back down the aisle to the soundtrack of Stevie Wonder, their smiles took over their faces.
We headed over the road to the shores of Lake Tahoe after the ceremony for some photos. The sun was going down, and we managed to grab the last couple of minutes of golden hour. I so love Lake Tahoe, and any mountain wedding or lakeside wedding. The views of the snow capped mountains were stunning, and Matt whirled a giddy Bex round as they completely forgot about my camera and just enjoyed their first moments as husband and wife.
Back at the venue, they enjoyed their first dance and then the celebrations began! I love to dance at weddings, so when Becky’s uncle told me he liked ballroom, and asked me to dance, I could not say no. Unfortunately we were a bit over enthusiastic, and when he dipped me at the end of the song, he dropped me. I pulled him down with me, and from the floor I noticed Becky’s grandmother filming everything on her phone and laughing her socks off! My cameras were fine, and I cushioned his fall 🙂
After the reception the wedding party continued at a local bar. I joined them for a soft drink, and then had to make my drive down to San Francisco for a wedding the next day. It truly was a beautiful wedding, and I hope you will join me in wishing them a lifetime of happiness.
