SOFIA COPPOLA VIBES IN ITALY on KODAK FILM
This Tuscany wedding on film had all the makings of a dreamy Italian escape. A villa in Tuscany, a film camera in hand, and a couple from Liverpool who wanted their day to feel like a Sofia Coppola film. Soft, chic, and a little bit undone. The weather, of course, had other plans. But somehow that only made it more perfect.
It rained for most of the day. But when the sun did appear, for all of ten glorious minutes, we ran straight into it and made every frame count. That golden light? Straight out of Marie Antoinette. And yes, I ran down the road after the car dripping with cameras. Ran back up the road while Carl tried to find first gear again. I’m no runner, btw. In any form.
The groom is a comedian, with many more in attendance. The whole day pulsed with that dry, brilliant humour you only get from Northerners. And the girls? Melted my heart with their kindness and vibes. They didn’t want anything stiff or performative. Just a day that felt true to them: joyful, emotional, slightly chaotic, and set against the kind of Tuscan backdrop that makes your heart ache.
I shot the whole thing on Kodak film. Mostly Portra 400 and 800, with a few rolls of Kodak TMax 3200 when the light dipped. Medium format for the slower moments and those banging black and whites during the first dance, and when Carl and Sorcha went to get changed. 35mm for the fast ones. The mood, the grain, the intimacy – it’s exactly what film was made for. I’m just bummed I went home before they all descended on Pisa, complete with multi coloured rain ponchos.
I genuinely fell in love with this lot. Not just the couple, but the whole crew. It was one of those weddings where you feel like you’re part of something, not just documenting it. And yes, being referred to as Pamela Anderson all day didn’t hurt (look, I get it). If you’re planning a Tuscany wedding on film with heart, humour, and a little cinematic chaos, I’m all in.
